Chocolate (Cacao) Banana Protein Shake

Everyone loves a thick, luscious chocolate shake at times to satisfy that sweet tooth.

​But what if you could satiate the craving without the guilt? 

Let me introduce you to the superfood Cacao - (pronounced kə-ˈkā-ō).

This highly satisfying Chocolate Banana smoothie takes less than 5 minutes to make and is great for those on the go.   Made with cacao, this will provide you mega nutrients, without the overloading, decreased HDL and increased LDL cholesterol levels, elevated blood sugar, elevated triglycerides and high blood pressure. These are all risks of too much sugar intake.   
 
Adding cinnamon to your smoothie helps reduce inflammation and stabilize blood as well as add a natural sweetness to your recipe.   Ceylon cinnamon or ‘True Cinnamon” has more health benefits than the Cassia brand. 
 
By adding South American superfood chia seeds to your smoothie, you are getting a powerhouse of omega 3’s and nutrients. Grown in Mexico and South America, ancient civilizations believed that the chia seed provided supernatural powers. In Mayan, “chia” means “strength.”  Chia seeds have little to no flavor and can be added to a wide range of foods for texture.
 
Flax is another rich source of plant-based omega-3 fatty acids, called alpha-linolenic acid (or ALA). Flaxseeds are most beneficial when ground into flaxseed meal as it helps absorb the fiber it contains keeping you full until your next meal.
 
This highly nutritious shake is super delicious, satisfying and guilt free! Give it a try and let us know what you think.

Ingredients 
1 frozen banana (peel before freezing)
1 1/2 tablespoons raw cacao powder (a super food)
3 tablespoons ground flax seeds (high in omega 3s)
1/2 cup water or nut milk
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3-4 ice cubes
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, alcohol-free (optional)
 
Directions
Combine all of the ingredients in a high-speed blender.  Blend until thick and smooth. Adjust to taste. Serve immediately.
 
Additional Ideas
  • Add a handful of organic spinach to your smoothie to pack a nutritional punch without affecting the flavor. Spinach is a superfood. It is loaded with nutrients that provide protein, iron, vitamins, and minerals  important for skin, hair, and bone health.
  • For additional protein, add one tablespoon of your favorite nut butter: almond, cashew, etc.
  • Alternate between ground flax, hemp or chia seeds for variety in your smoothies.
  • Adding avocado gives a creamy texture. It is another super food loaded with healthy fats, nutrients and fiber which may help with metabolism and weight loss.
  • Lemon and lime have great antioxidant effects to reduce the signs of aging and hydrate your skin.  
  • Adding herbs, such as mint or basil, adds nice flavor as well as antioxidant/anti-inflammatory properties.
